A campaign was just started by Hollywood actress Charlize Theron, and we are here to support it. The campaign was launched to raise awareness for gender-based violence amid the global coronavirus pandemic.
While abuse against women didn’t just start, it has been heightened by the stress of being under quarantine. Many women who were already facing abuse, now have no outlet to seek refuge because of the shutdown. The Oscar winner announced via her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) and has also partnered with CARE and the Entertainment Industry Foundation to float “Together For Her”, a global initiative to raise funds to support the fight against domestic violence during the Covid-19 crisis.
She has already committed 1 million to support Covid-19 relief efforts. Proceeds from the donations will go to domestic violence shelters and other programs.
Charlize tweeted this:

In Solidarity #TogetherForHer
1 in 3 women will experience gender-based violence in their lifetime; in the past year, 243 million women and girls have. Humanitarian crises like #COVID19 only make this worse – that’s why in April we & Charlize Theron called on ALL women to stand up and prioritize this issue. Today, we’re so proud to share that each of these exceptional, badass, powerhouse women heard our rallying cry, and are uniting as one, #TogetherForHer, alongside CARE, & Entertainment Industry Foundation.
Other women have already jumped on board to support this cause including Viola Davis who posted this on her Instagram.

What can you do to support someone dealing with abuse?
Here are some tips if you know someone dealing with domestic violence at home. Show women that they aren’t fighting this battle alone. Support and make time for them even if that means sending text and checking in throughout the day. Check-in- and call them, just hearing another person’s voice while going through something could mean the difference in a woman’s life. Ask what you can do to support them.
Don’t Judge
No matter what the situation – a woman never wants to feel judged. The best thing you can do is give that woman time to come to the realization shes’ ready to leave. TechMae offers a new community exclusively for women to have a place of support from other women. A non-judgment zone.
Ask the victim where they would go if they could leave.
Many times whats stopping a woman from leaving is finances. That’s why it’s so important what Charlize is doing to support women during this time. Give the victim resources to seek help. Domestic violence is a serious threat to many women. Sometimes the signs come subtly, but it’s up to you to recognize them early and get away from it in the beginning.
If you are a woman suffering from domestic violence remember these tips:
You are not to blame for being battered or mistreated.
You are not the cause of your partner’s abusive behavior.
You deserve to be treated with respect.
You deserve a safe and happy life.
Your children deserve a safe and happy life.
You are not alone. There are people waiting to help.
If you want to leave, know that you can leave. There are resources available to you, you don’t have to suffer. Your life matters and it’s up to you to make the most of it.
Thank you, Charlize Theron, for starting this movement. TechMae supports you and stands with you.
